Secretary, chief of staff and special counsel to the Board of Trustees

Catherine Mizell became secretary, chief of staff and special counsel to the University of Tennessee Board of Trustees on Jan. 1, 2017. Prior to this appointment, Mizell had served as both Board secretary and University general counsel since 2000.

In 2016, the growth of Board needs and activity were determined to require a dedicated, full-time position, and Mizell was appointed by the Board and with the support of the UT president.

In this position, she is responsible for providing all legal advice and representation for the Board, is its principal staff liaison and serves as secretary of the University.
 
Mizell joined UT in 1976. From 1980 to 1984, she was general counsel and secretary for the Tennessee Board of Regents system. She returned to the UT staff in 1984 and has served continuously since then.
 
She holds B.A. and J.D. degrees from UT Knoxville. She is a member of the National Association of College and University Attorneys.
